We have expanded our aged care service scope to Allied Health services. AFCS recognises the significance of culturally appropriate care in supporting the health and wellbeing of ageing Filipinos living in Victoria. Seniors can now access Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy by Filipino speaking Allied Health Professionals.

3rd Annual Celebrate Filipino! Community Gathering

On Saturday 16 March 2024, we held our 3rd annual Celebrate Filipino! Community Gathering at Wilson Botanic Park Berwick, attracting approx. 600 people and showcasing AFCS’ growing Filipino performing arts efforts across generations and regions in Victoria. Iconic to the Gathering, we hosted our ‘Free Lechon Lunch’, sharing Filipino culture through food.

In its third year, the event observes National Neighbour Day (31 March) with the focus in connecting local Filipinos to local services and information about the community.
This year was filled with family-friendly activities including face painting, Filipino games, the Wilson Botanic Park Berwick Scavenger Hunt with Filipino translation (courtesy of AFCS),  AFL footy games, and who could forget our annual TINIKLING CHALLENGE! This year, the AFCS Tinikling Challenge reached new heights with more members of the community giving the Tinikling a try and learning about its cultural significance. We managed to launch our AFCS Tinikling Challenge on TikTok.

This year was the inaugural children’s Tinikling performance at the Community Gathering- a success from last year’s Community Gathering that sparked community interest by families wanting to enrol their children to learn the Tinikling. With the funding support from the City of Casey, we were able to establish the ‘Let’s Tinikling! Community Class’ in July 2023. The program offers a low-cost and supportive social environment for intergenerational learning and passing down of the traditional dance.

The event also showcased AFCS cultural ambassadors who performed the Singkil and Fan Dance.

Our guests and speakers at the event were Brad Battin MP for Berwick, Consul General Ma. Lourdes Salcedo and Consul Ralph Abarquez from the Philippine Consulate General Melbourne, Ann-Marie Hermans MP for Southern Metropolitan Region, and Damien Rosario, former Deputy Mayor of City of Casey.

AFCS had an information and fundraising stall to provide service information about what we do to support the community, and the selling of Filipino cultural attire as part of our fundraising efforts. We also held a barbecue and sold drinks to raise funds. Proceeds from the fundraiser went towards our Filipino Charity House that supports Filipinos in crisis needing short term accommodation. Further to our fundraising efforts, we also held our community raffle.

We thank all the staff, volunteers and Board members involved in the planning and delivering of the event. Thank you to the local businesses who supported our event including donors for raffles. We thank Wilson Botanic Park Berwick for partnering with us to deliver the event in its third year, and to the City of Casey for supporting our event.

We managed to launch our AFCS Tinikling Challenge on TikTok.
